I think these photographs are remarkable because he’s taken the time during combat to stop, to assess what’s going on around him and bear in mind it’s a manual camera. He has to set aperture, he has to set his focus distance and he has to set his shutter speed. And he has to decide all that, how he’s going to take the image, he then brings the camera up and he takes the photograph.

Moreno: It amazes me that he was able to take those photographs when in the presence of battle and the artillery shells and the machine gun bullets flying round him, that he could remember what he had to do but that he did it and then he made it back. I just think it’s completely stunning.
